DIABETES(THE THIRD KILLER OF MANKAND

                                 DIABETES

HI GUYS! How is you weekend going?
There is this saying that ‘Health is wealth’ so we all should do a good job staying   alive and healthy.

Today is gonna be about the third killer of mankind(diabetes) , this was  actually my project research topic.
In the course of my research, I came across some things I will like to share because I want my readers to be safe, for me(smile).

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the worlds largest growing metabolic disorder of the endocrine system . Diabetes mellitus is becoming the third killer of mankind after cancer and cardiovascular diseases due to it’s high prevalence, morbidity and motality. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by a chronic hyperglycemic condition resulting from defect in insulin secretion, insulin action or both.

Diabetes have been classified as Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The Type 1 diabetes is also called insulin dependent diabetes mellitus(IDDM) and the Type 2 diabetes is also called non insulin dependent diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is the result of an autoimmune reaction to proteins of the islets cells of the pancreas

Type 2 diabetes is a heterogeneous disorder caused by combination of genetic factors related to impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance and environmental factors such as obesity, over eating, lack of exercise, stress as well as ageing.

According to a report from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF)  eventhough diabetes is as lethal as HIV/Aids and cases in Africa have nearly doubled to more than 7 million within the past 15 years and this illness receives scanty attention from donors or the government in Africa.

This is also true of Nigeria situation,it has been commented that food exchanges, home blood sugar monitoring, continous ambulatory insulin infusion by pump and other modern therapies that are routinely employed in the care of diabetes in developed world are only for the privileged few in a developing country like Nigeria.

Until the discovery of Insulin in 1920s, nutritional therapy was the only available remedy for treating diabetes. The discovery of insulin has revolutionized the diabetes care and this hormone is currently the drug of choice for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus as well. Apart from insulin, several types of glucose-lowering drugs including insulin secretagogues (sulfonylureas, meglitinides), insulin sensitizers (biguanides, metformin, thiazolidinediones) and α-glucosidase inhibitors (miglitol, acarbose) have been developed.

Effective blood glucose control is the key  for preventing or reversing diabetic complications and improving quality of life in diabetic patients. Controlled hyperglycemia will decrease the risk of developing micro-vascular and macro-vascular complications and provide better diabetes management hence preventing morbidity and mortality.

How to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes

     Check your risk of diabetes.
     Manage your weight
     Exercise regularly.
     Eat a balanced, healthy diet.
     Limit takeaway and processed foods.
     Limit your alcohol intake.
     Quit smoking.
     Control your blood pressure.

my sincere appreciation goes to my supervisor,DR OLUSOLA OLALEKAN ELEKOFEHINTI.When kindness cannot be returned,it should be appreciated.
